Introduction    The QAM modulator is an integral component of Scientific-Atlanta's DBDS but also can be configured and used as a Stand Alone clear QAM unit. The QAM modulator has up to three input interfaces to allow various data formats (usually MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS)) and rates. The QAM modulator outputs multiple application data formats: video, audio, and Internet Protocol (IP) formats. It maintains high spectral efficiency by the integration of powerful adaptive equalizers, interleavers, and error correction. It also carries system information, conditional access information, and Broadcast File Server (BFS) files.

RF Outputs       The QAM modulator outputs a modulated RF signal that can be transported securely in CATV and HFC networks. There are about 27 Mbits of useable bandwidth for a 64 QAM or about 36 Mbits for a 256 QAM. The output converter allows the signal to be output on frequencies between 150 MHz and 750 MHz.

(CA) System       This model of the QAM modulator houses Conditional Access (CA) systems which protect the DBDS from signal theft. The CA functionality provides cryptographic security of the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) packets, including the creation and insertion of entitlement messages. The unit implements service level encryption and inserts the Entitlement Control Messages (ECM) into the stream.
